Drivers and commuters have called on contractors to accelerate work on the 73.6-kilometre Takoradi-Cape Coast N1 highway dualisation project. This significant infrastructure undertaking aims to improve traffic flow and enhance safety on the road.

President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the project in October last year. It forms part of the government’s flagship “Big Push” initiative, a national programme focused on infrastructure development. The construction work was divided into three lots and awarded to three different contractors for completion within 24 months.

This particular highway is crucial for connecting two key regional capitals and facilitates significant economic activity. Delays in its completion can directly impact the transportation of goods and people, affecting businesses and livelihoods. The project’s progress is vital for Ghana’s broader economic objectives, particularly in the Western and Central regions.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed ongoing excavation and culvert construction on the Takoradi-Shama Junction section. This segment falls under lot three, managed by Messrs. S&L Construction and Engineering Limited. However, commercial driver Patrick Ofori Awuku expressed strong dissatisfaction with the slow pace. He stated that the road’s current poor condition makes driving difficult, especially during heavy rains. Mr Awuku highlighted the financial burden on drivers due to increased vehicle maintenance costs caused by the bad road surface.

The slow progress on this vital dualisation project risks increasing transportation costs and travel times for businesses and individuals. Continued delays could also deter investment in the regions dependent on this road. Authorities and contractors will face mounting pressure to address the concerns raised by road users and expedite the project’s completion. This will ensure the highway delivers its intended economic and safety benefits promptly.
