President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that construction of the proposed Bolgatanga Airport will begin by the end of 2026. This follows the ongoing procurement process. The new airport aims to significantly enhance air connectivity in the Upper East Region.
Government is working to secure all necessary approvals by October, paving the way for construction to start later this year. President Mahama made this announcement during his tour of the Upper East Region on August 13, 2026. He stated that a groundbreaking ceremony would occur by year-end.
This project fits into Ghana's broader infrastructure development agenda, targeting improved regional access and economic growth. The government views the airport as a critical enabler for economic activity. It also aims to be a game-changer for the Upper East Region's development prospects. Similar airport projects are also planned for Wa and Sunyani, indicating a national strategy for air transport expansion.
James Agalga, Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, confirmed the procurement process is active. He stated the company is working diligently to obtain all required approvals by October. This will allow the President to officially cut the sod for construction to commence. Mr. Agalga also serves as the Member of Parliament for Builsa North.
Once construction begins, the airport is expected to take 24 months to complete. The contractor has indicated potential for earlier delivery. The facility will initially accommodate about 100,000 passengers each year. It is designed for future expansion to meet growing demand. The airport will be built on approximately 4,000 acres of land. Traditional authorities generously donated this land for the project.
Key features of the new airport include a 2.2-kilometre runway and an aircraft apron. It will also have an air traffic control tower and night-operation lighting. Rescue and firefighting facilities are part of the design. A five-kilometre asphalted access road will connect the airport. These features ensure modern operational standards and safety. The project is expected to create jobs during construction and operation. It will also facilitate trade and tourism in the region.
