Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and Dredge Masters Gh. Ltd have intensified flood prevention and drainage desilting operations across multiple vulnerable communities in the Greater Accra Region. This large-scale intervention addresses the peak of Ghana's rainy season. The primary goal is to reduce the significant impact of seasonal flooding on lives, property, and economic activity in the capital city.
The collaborative effort brings together sanitation personnel, engineers, and heavy equipment operators. Local authorities, security agencies, and community members also participate. They work to improve stormwater flow and strengthen flood resilience. Teams have already deployed to identify flood-prone areas. These include Teshie-Nungua, the Osu Castle beachfront, Achimota, and Abokobi. Debris removal, desilting, and dredging activities are underway in these locations. The operation focuses on clearing accumulated silt, plastic waste, and other debris that obstruct drains. Such obstructions have historically caused flash flooding during heavy rainfall events.
This initiative fits into Ghana’s broader disaster preparedness strategy, recognizing the recurring economic disruption caused by floods. Flooding in Accra often leads to significant financial losses from damaged infrastructure and halted business activities. Previous government and private sector efforts have also targeted flood mitigation. The consistent need for these interventions highlights the scale of Ghana's infrastructure development challenge. It also underscores poor waste management practices. The World Bank previously estimated that urban flooding costs Ghana millions of GHS annually in direct and indirect damages.
Alhassan Mohamadu Cabilla, Assembly Member for Blekese West in Nungua, praised Zoomlion Ghana Limited. He noted their prompt response to community requests for support. Mr. Cabilla stated that while residents conduct monthly clean-up exercises, the volume of silt requires specialized equipment. Edem Agbenyfie, Ga East Municipal Director of NADMO, also lauded Dredge Masters' technical expertise. He pointed out the critical role of the mechanical dredging on the Dakobi River in the Pantang-Madina-Abokobi enclave.
These intensified operations signal a concentrated effort to safeguard Accra communities and infrastructure. Officials warn developers building within waterways that planning regulations will be enforced, including demolition. This aims to ensure natural water flow and public safety remain priorities. Continued rainfall forecasts for southern Ghana mean authorities will maintain their commitment to deploying personnel and equipment. This will minimize flood-related disasters throughout the Greater Accra Region. Sustained public education and responsible waste disposal are also crucial for lasting results.
