President John Dramani Mahama has initiated the construction of a Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Carpark and Airport Hotels Complex at Accra International Airport. This significant project aims to modernize Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and enhance the overall passenger experience. The facility is designed to meet future demands arising from increasing passenger traffic.
The complex, expected to be completed within 24 months, will feature a seven-storey car park offering more than 2,000 parking bays. It will also include two hotels, a pedestrian connector to Terminal Three, and a shopping mall with a food court. Additionally, the development will provide retail and office spaces for rent, a sky lounge for entertainment, and a sky observatory for aircraft viewing. This comprehensive development addresses critical infrastructure needs at the airport.
This investment aligns with Ghana’s broader economic strategy to strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub. The project builds on previous aviation infrastructure expansions, such as the construction of Terminal Three in 2014. That earlier development responded to rising passenger traffic and capacity constraints at Terminal Two. Such strategic investments are crucial for Ghana’s economic growth and development aspirations, supporting business, tourism, and investment.
President Mahama emphasized the government's commitment to improving passenger experience and ensuring airport infrastructure keeps pace with economic growth. Passenger traffic through Accra International Airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. The project will provide additional parking capacity and improve traffic circulation.
Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is proactively addressing existing and future infrastructure needs through this project. The vertical design of the facility ensures efficient use of limited space. This design also creates room for additional airport-related services, maximizing the utility of the available land. The project extends beyond parking, representing an integrated airport development.
Upon completion, the seven-storey complex will provide about 2,030 covered parking bays. This significantly increases parking capacity around Terminal Three, easing current congestion. President Mahama also highlighted other government initiatives to boost the aviation sector. He recently assented to a new Ghana Customs Act, which removes duties and taxes on imported aircraft spare parts for domestic airlines. This measure aims to make domestic airlines safer and more competitive. It directly benefits carriers like Passion Air and Africa World Airlines, reducing their operational costs.
Furthermore, preparations are underway for constructing new airports in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Nsoatre. These regional airports will further expand aviation infrastructure across the country.
