President John Dramani Mahama has launched the construction of a new Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Carpark and Airport Hotels Complex at Accra International Airport. This significant GHS 1.2 billion investment aims to modernize Ghana's aviation infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience.
The project, expected to be completed within 24 months, will feature a seven-storey car park with over 2,000 parking bays. It also includes two hotels, a shopping mall, retail and office spaces, and a pedestrian connector to Terminal Three. This development directly addresses the growing pressure on parking facilities and traffic movement within the airport area.
This initiative fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to improve infrastructure and support tourism and business. Passenger traffic at Accra International Airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. This growth reflects Ghana's expanding air connectivity and its attractiveness for business, tourism, and investment. The government views robust aviation infrastructure as crucial for sustaining this economic momentum.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the importance of proactive infrastructure development. He stated, "The lesson from that investment is clear: infrastructure must anticipate growth." He added that responsible leadership requires planning and building ahead to avoid congestion and lost opportunities. The President also highlighted recent changes to the Ghana Customs Act, removing duties and taxes on imported aircraft spare parts for domestic airlines.
The completion of this complex will significantly increase parking capacity and improve traffic flow around Terminal Three. It will also provide additional airport-related services, benefiting passengers, business travelers, and tourists. This project is a key step in strengthening Ghana's position as a preferred aviation hub in West Africa and supporting a globally competitive aviation sector.
Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), confirmed the project's role in modernizing the airport. Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, described it as a significant milestone in expanding Ghana's aviation infrastructure. The government also plans airports in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Nsoatre, further expanding national aviation capabilities.
