Residents across 19 communities in Ghana’s Western Region are currently without electricity. A damaged high-tension (HT) electricity pole in Half Assini triggered this significant power outage. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed the infrastructure failure on June 22, 2026.

This disruption directly affects electricity distribution across multiple towns. Communities impacted include Asemkrom, Jema, Boinso, Omanpe, Kwahu, Atokosue, Nkwanta, and Enchi Township. Elubo, Nyankamam, Akontombra, New Yakasi, Old Yakasi, Adjakaa, Achimfo, Abokyia, and neighbouring areas also face power cuts. The outage started on Monday, June 22, severely impacting daily life and commerce.

Such widespread power outages frequently highlight vulnerabilities in Ghana's national grid infrastructure. Reliable electricity supply is crucial for economic activity and social well-being across the country. Data from previous years shows that power interruptions, often due to aging infrastructure or localized faults, can hinder small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and disrupt essential public services. This incident mirrors earlier power challenges in Northern, Middle, and Western regions due to transmission faults.

ECG, in a statement issued on Monday, June 22, explained the cause of the disruption. The company stated the outage is directly linked to the faulty infrastructure at Half Assini. ECG expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to customers. Such statements often accompany efforts to manage public expectations during disruptions.

Restoration efforts are currently underway to rectify the damage. Power will be restored once necessary technical works are completed. The system must be deemed safe for reconnection before supply resumes. Businesses in the affected areas face revenue losses and operational challenges, while households cope without essential services. Decision-makers and market participants will closely watch the speed and efficiency of the restoration. Prolonged outages can influence investor confidence and economic output in regional economies.
