Tullow facilitates local crude oil supply to Sentuo refinery

Tullow Ghana has started providing crude oil from the Jubilee Field to the Sentuo Oil Refinery for local processing. This effort follows a collaboration with Ghana's Ministry of Energy and Green Transition. The initiative aims to strengthen Ghana's local refining capabilities and improve the nation's energy security.

This arrangement makes Ghanaian crude oil available to a domestic refinery, reducing reliance on imported refined petroleum products. Tullow, operator of the Jubilee Field, worked with its marketer Glencore to facilitate this supply. The deal supports governmental goals to boost local industrial development and ensure a stable fuel supply for the Ghanaian market.

This move is a strategic step for Ghana's economy, facing persistent pressures in global crude supply chains. Geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility often increase the cost of imported fuel. Processing crude locally can offer a cost-effective alternative to importing refined products. It also helps to retain foreign exchange within the country.

Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. He stated that the initiative demonstrates the power of government and industry working together for national objectives. He added that a stronger domestic refining industry enhances fuel supply reliability and generates employment.

Jean-Medard Madama, Tullow Managing Director, affirmed Tullow's commitment to Ghana’s energy sector development beyond just crude production. He noted that facilitating local access to crude strengthens the petroleum value chain. This will contribute to energy security, industrial growth, and long-term value creation.

The transportation of crude oil from Ghana’s offshore fields to Tema for refining offers commercial benefits. It is more attractive than sourcing crude feedstock from overseas markets. This local processing reduces freight costs and logistical complexities associated with international shipments. This makes the overall supply chain more efficient and resilient.

This development is crucial for Ghana’s balance of payments, as it reduces the foreign exchange needed for fuel imports. A reduced need for hard currency to buy refined products can ease pressure on the Ghana cedi. This contributes to overall macroeconomic stability.

Looking ahead, this initiative could encourage further investment in Ghana’s refining sector. It may also promote local content development within the petroleum industry. Decision-makers will observe the long-term impact on domestic fuel prices and supply stability. The success of this collaboration could serve as a model for future partnerships in vital economic sectors.
