The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Ghana's Northern Region successfully resolved 433 out of 436 consumer complaints during the first half of 2026. This impressive resolution rate of 99.31% highlights the Commission's commitment to consumer protection and improved utility service delivery.

The majority of these complaints, specifically 409 cases, were directed at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), accounting for 93.81% of the total. Ghana Water Limited (GWL) received 27 complaints, making up the remaining 6.19%. The PURC successfully addressed 407 NEDCo-related complaints and 26 GWL-related issues within the review period.

This proactive approach by the PURC fits into Ghana's broader economic narrative of strengthening regulatory oversight and improving public service efficiency. Effective utility regulation is crucial for fostering consumer confidence and ensuring reliable infrastructure, which are vital for economic growth. Such interventions help mitigate potential disruptions to businesses and households, contributing to a more stable economic environment.

Dr. Shaffic Suleman, Executive Secretary of the PURC, has emphasized the positive impact of the complaints management process. He noted that it benefits both customers and utility providers by ensuring fair practices and accountability. The Commission's efforts extend beyond complaint resolution to include significant infrastructure improvements and public education.

Looking ahead, the PURC's continued focus on consumer education and stakeholder engagement will be critical. These initiatives aim to empower consumers with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, while also providing the Commission with direct feedback on service challenges. This ongoing dialogue will likely lead to further improvements in utility service quality and consumer satisfaction across the region, impacting household budgets and business operations.

The PURC's Mid-Year 2026 Regional Performance Report detailed several key achievements. It facilitated bill adjustments totaling GHS 67,371.51 in favor of six NEDCo customers. Conversely, the Commission also helped NEDCo recover GHS 85,224.48 from three individuals. These financial interventions demonstrate the PURC's role in ensuring equitable financial transactions between consumers and utility providers.

Infrastructure development also saw significant progress. The PURC office facilitated the replacement and installation of five transformers in areas like Kootingli, Bunglung, and Suburu in Bimbilla. Additionally, 10 high-tension poles and nine broken low-voltage poles were replaced. The conversion of four faulty single-phase postpaid meters to prepaid meters and the prompt repair of 10 low-voltage cable faults further enhanced service reliability.

The Commission intensified its consumer education and stakeholder engagement programs through various outreach activities. These programs targeted traditional authorities, opinion leaders, youth groups, and religious communities. Such engagements are vital for fostering a well-informed populace and ensuring that utility services meet community needs effectively. This comprehensive approach underscores the PURC's commitment to a robust regulatory framework and improved public utility services in Ghana.
