Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has completed essential repair works on the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines. This critical maintenance exercise, which commenced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, concluded on schedule despite encountering various technical and operational challenges. The successful completion means water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
However, GWL has cautioned customers that water supply will not return to normal immediately. The company explained that water would gradually reach affected communities as transmission lines and reservoirs refill. Pressure in the water distribution system also needs time to restore fully. This phased return ensures system stability and prevents further issues.
This repair is vital for maintaining consistent water supply to large parts of the Greater Accra and Eastern regions. The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, praised the teams involved for their hard work and professionalism. He specifically acknowledged the leadership of Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, Lead and Chief Manager of ATMA Production, and Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, General Manager in charge of Operations. Their dedication ensured the repairs finished on time.
Mr. Mutawakilu also thanked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, for their crucial support. The ECG team worked closely with GWL staff, including during night hours, to address important electrical and operational issues. This collaboration was instrumental in enabling the timely resumption of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
The successful completion of these repairs demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation and technical expertise.
