Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced temporary disruptions in water supply across the country. This follows a national power outage that affected the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo)’s National Interconnected Transmission System.
The ongoing difficulties with the national power grid have impacted several water treatment plants and pumping stations. Most of GWL's production facilities depend on electricity from the national grid. This makes power interruptions a major setback for water production and distribution.
This incident highlights Ghana's persistent challenges with infrastructure reliability. Frequent power outages, locally known as 'dumsor', have historically hampered economic activity and public services. The interconnectedness of essential services means a failure in one sector, like power, quickly cascades to others, such as water supply. In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, GWL explained that its water production systems are not operational due to the power supply interruptions. The company stated, “As a result of the power supply interruptions, most of GWL's water production systems, which rely on electricity supplied through the national grid, are not operational.”
The situation has affected GWL's ability to produce and supply potable water to customers in the impacted areas. GWL has apologized to affected consumers, describing the disruption as an unfortunate situation beyond its control. The utility provider assured the public that its technical teams are ready to resume production and distribution once stable power supply is restored. GWL is working with relevant institutions in the power sector and monitoring developments closely. This collaboration aims to ensure normal operations return as soon as possible.
