Frequent Power Trips Threaten Ghana's Electricity Grid

    Ghana faces an alarming increase in frequent power outages, prompting urgent calls for measures to prevent nationwide blackouts. Ben Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), issued this stark warning.

    The concerns follow two major power disruptions within recent weeks, with the latest attributed by GRIDCo to a fault near the Akosombo transmission line. Mr. Boakye emphasized that while power system trips occur globally, their escalating frequency in Ghana is deeply troubling. He pointed to vulnerabilities within the country’s transmission network, especially around the critical Akosombo infrastructure, as a primary cause.

    This situation highlights ongoing challenges within Ghana's energy sector, which has historically grappled with power supply stability. The nation’s electricity network relies on both 161kV and 330kV transmission lines. A fault in the higher-voltage 330kV network risks transferring its load onto the 161kV lines. This can overwhelm the lower-capacity network, potentially causing cascading failures across the entire grid. Such incidents underscore the persistent need for robust infrastructure development and maintenance to support Ghana's economic growth and industrialization efforts.

    “It's quite disturbing to have this number of trips in a short period of time,” Mr. Boakye stated during an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile. He further explained, “What is becoming alarming is the frequency that these trips are happening.” He also cited inadequate protection at the Akosombo switchyard as a factor. This deficiency can cause generation facilities to cut off during a fault, leading to frequency imbalances and a potential system collapse.

    Addressing these issues requires immediate and strategic interventions. Decision-makers must prioritize isolating generation plants quickly when a major transmission line trips. This prevents localized faults from escalating into widespread outages. Furthermore, significant investment in strengthening and expanding Ghana’s transmission infrastructure is crucial. A more resilient, fully looped network would offer alternative routes for power evacuation, reducing the risk of single-point failures. Authorities must also thoroughly investigate the root causes of repeated 330kV line trips to develop comprehensive short-, medium-, and long-term solutions. The stability of Ghana's power supply directly impacts businesses, households, and overall economic productivity.
