Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor wants the new 900-megawatt (MW) Takoradi power plant finished earlier. He has asked the companies building it to speed up their work. The goal is to complete the project by September 2027. This is three months sooner than the original plan.

The planned 900MW Combined Cycle Power Plant is a large project. It is designed to add significant electricity-generating power to Ghana’s national grid. This new capacity is very important. It will help meet the country’s growing need for electricity. It is also vital for supporting businesses and industries as they expand.

Ghana’s economy relies heavily on a stable and sufficient power supply. This new plant will improve the nation’s energy security. Energy security means having enough power when it is needed. This helps prevent power outages, known as 'dumsor'. Such outages can harm businesses and daily life. The project fits into government plans to industrialise Ghana. Industrialisation involves developing more factories and industries. These activities require a lot of electricity to run.

The Minister announced his directive after a meeting on Friday, June 5. He met with the AKSA team, who are the developers. Key people from Ghana’s energy sector also attended this meeting. Dr. Jinapor said the project was originally set to finish in December 2027. Speeding up the work is now a top priority. He believes this faster completion is achievable. His commitment is to ensure the project’s success. This power plant is seen as a key part of Ghana’s energy future.

Completing the Takoradi plant ahead of schedule can have several positive effects. It provides earlier access to more electricity. This can help lower power costs for consumers and businesses. It also signals strong government commitment to energy infrastructure development. Investors often watch these large projects. Early completion might encourage more investment in Ghana’s energy sector. The Ministry will closely monitor progress to ensure the September 2027 target is met. The added power will also help power supply reliability across the nation.
