The Electricity Company of Ghana bought about 17,961 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2025 but sold only about 13,134 gigawatt-hours, leaving roughly 4,827 gigawatt-hours that did not generate sales. ECG's system loss rate stood at 26.9%, only slightly better than 27.05% in 2024.
The losses remain a major problem for Ghana's main power distributor. ECG recorded an operating loss of about GHS14.4 billion in 2025 as the cost of buying and distributing electricity remained well above the money generated from its operations.
ECG also ended the year with supplier obligations of about GHS46.7 billion, largely money owed to independent power producers. Its final after-tax loss was GHS2.52 billion, helped by a large foreign exchange gain during the year.
The figures show that reducing electricity losses and improving collections remain central to ECG's finances. Even a small fall in the share of electricity that is bought but never paid for could recover significant revenue for the company.
