The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced power outages affecting parts of the Greater Accra and Volta regions. These disruptions stem from damaged electricity infrastructure and necessary emergency maintenance works.
In the Accra West Region, a significant outage impacts Sowutuom and its surrounding communities. This particular disruption is a direct result of broken high-tension poles in Sowutuom. Affected areas include Sowutuom Mambo, Glorious Jesus, Ablekuma Fanmilk, Ablekuma Abease, God First, Roman Park, Piteo Junction, Vicollis, and Olebu Melcom.
ECG engineers are currently working to repair the damaged infrastructure. Their goal is to restore electricity supply to all affected areas as quickly as possible. The company has not yet provided a specific restoration time for the Sowutuom outage. However, it confirmed that technical teams are actively addressing the fault.
Ghana's energy sector has faced persistent challenges, including infrastructure deficits and financial constraints. These issues often lead to intermittent power supply, locally known as 'dumsor'. The current outages highlight the ongoing need for significant investment and maintenance in the national grid. The Volta Region will also experience two separate emergency maintenance exercises on Thursday, August 13. The first exercise is scheduled from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. It will allow engineers to work on a fault affecting electricity supply in Sokode Ando, Sokode Gbagble, parts of Sokode Gborgame, and surrounding areas.
A second emergency maintenance exercise will occur on the same day, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This will affect Payin, Dzodze, Ziope, Akporkope, Agortime, Kpetoe, and their surrounding communities. ECG stated that these planned interruptions are essential for carrying out critical work on faults within the electricity network.
The company has apologised for the inconvenience caused by both the Sowutuom outage and the scheduled maintenance. ECG emphasised that the work is being undertaken to address existing faults. The ultimate aim is to restore a reliable and stable electricity supply across the affected regions. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve the national power grid's resilience.
