Asanko Gold Ghana Limited has launched a Literacy Improvement Project in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES). This initiative targets school children in the Amansie West and Amansie South Districts to enhance their reading and literacy skills.
The project includes providing GES-approved reading books and promoting engaging literacy activities. It also focuses on strengthening teachers' capacity to nurture confident readers. A key part of the programme involves a partnership with the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation. This partnership will deploy mobile and virtual libraries to participating schools. These libraries will give pupils regular access to a wider collection of books and digital learning resources.
This initiative fits into Ghana's broader educational development goals, especially in rural areas. Improving literacy rates is crucial for the nation's human capital development and economic growth. Justice Fenteng, General Manager of Asanko Gold Ghana Limited, stated the initiative aims to create sustained access to reading materials. Mr. Fenteng noted the project forms part of Asanko Gold Ghana's broader Social and Economic Development Plan. This plan partners with host communities to improve education, healthcare, livelihoods, and overall community well-being. He emphasized that investing in people, particularly in children's learning, has a lasting impact.
The company will work closely with the Ghana Education Service, traditional authorities, and local assemblies. This collaboration ensures the initiative delivers lasting value for generations. The launch included the presentation of GES-approved reading books, furniture, and other teaching materials to beneficiary schools. Simon Ampomaa Anrwi, the Amansie South District Director of the Ghana Education Service, described the project as timely. He noted it would enhance teachers' capacity to improve literacy outcomes. He added that the programme would equip teachers with skills for engaging pupils through literacy-focused activities like storytelling and spelling bees.
The Dikro (Opinion Leader) of the Kwabenaso Community, Nana Tabi Gyansah, commended Asanko Gold. He called the initiative a significant investment in the future of children in host communities. He expressed concern about declining literacy standards but was optimistic the intervention would reverse the trend. He urged all stakeholders to support efforts to improve education in the district. The success of the project will be measured by the collective commitment of teachers, parents, and students. This commitment will ensure young minds are nurtured and embrace learning opportunities.
