Twenty Senior High Schools in Ghana's Ashanti Region are set to compete for the ultimate prize in the eighth edition of the LUV FM High School Debate. This annual intellectual competition, powered by Kelcharcoal, begins on Monday, August 10, 2026. More than 100 schools participated in preliminary contests held across the region, with the top 20 emerging as finalists.
The finalists will demonstrate their skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork. Judges will assess participants based on the structure and clarity of arguments, presentation skills, technical accuracy, and overall delivery. This competition serves as a vital platform for developing young people beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The LUV FM High School Debate has grown significantly in stature and impact over the years. It contributes to the broader Ghanaian educational landscape by fostering essential skills for leadership and national development. The increasing participation from schools reflects the program's relevance and popularity within the region.
Maxwell Frimpong-Manso, Relationship Manager at LUV FM, stated that the competition has become an important platform for youth development. He noted that while only one school will be crowned, every participant gains valuable knowledge and confidence. Theodosia Jackson, Chairperson and Ambassador of the LUV FM High School Debate, highlighted the program's popularity, evidenced by the high number of participants. This initiative acts as a training ground, equipping students with the boldness to face future obstacles.
Dr. Peter Arthur, Lead Judge and Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Department of English, explained the refined judging process for this year. He stated that the focus would be more on the technical strength of arguments, moving beyond emotional appeal. Participants will be assessed on logic, organization, and evidence-based presentations, reflecting high expectations for their intellectual capabilities.
Hope Arthur James, the Regional SRC President, acknowledged the successful partnership between the Ashanti Regional Students’ Council and LUV FM. This collaboration has created significant opportunities for students to develop their communication skills. The past eight years of this partnership have successfully brought out the best in students from the Ashanti Region.
