About 565,000 candidates who sat the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination have qualified for placement in Ghana's senior high and senior high technical schools. Nearly 620,000 candidates sat the examination. This means about 91% qualified for placement, while approximately 55,000 candidates did not meet the requirements.
The figures were disclosed by Sherif Sulemana, Coordinator of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System Secretariat. He said the figures came from an analysis by the Ghana Education Service.
Candidates are disqualified from placement if they fail either English Language or Mathematics. Those who meet the basic requirements will be considered during the placement exercise.
The results also show wide differences in performance. About 17% of candidates, equal to roughly 107,000 students, obtained aggregate scores ranging from 6 to 18.
Approximately 252,000 candidates, or about 35%, recorded aggregate scores between 6 and 24.
The placement system assigns qualified candidates to senior high schools, senior high technical schools and technical institutions based on their examination results, school choices, programme choices and available vacancies.
Candidates who are not assigned a school during the automatic process may use the self-placement system to select a school, programme and residential option with an available vacancy.
The figures show that most 2026 BECE candidates cleared the minimum placement requirement. However, the distribution of aggregate scores suggests that competition may remain strong for highly sought-after schools and programmes.
The next stage is the release of placement results. Candidates will then be able to check their assigned schools and use the self-placement option where necessary.
