Professor Peter Quartey has been appointed Provost of the University of Ghana’s College of Education, effective August 1, 2026. He will serve a three-year term in this significant academic leadership position.
This appointment recognizes Professor Quartey’s extensive background in academia, administration, and institutional leadership. He brings over 24 years of experience as a Professor of Economics, with a particular focus on education, skills development, and youth employment. His expertise is expected to significantly contribute to the College's strategic direction.
The University of Ghana’s College of Education, established in 2014, plays a crucial role in Ghana's educational landscape. It encompasses three schools, a dedicated centre, and two city campuses. The College also mentors six other Colleges of Education across the country, including Accra College of Education and Peki College of Education. This broad reach underscores its importance in shaping future educators and educational policies.
Professor Quartey’s prior roles include serving as the Acting Director of the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD) since 2025. He was also the immediate past Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). These positions highlight his proven capability in managing complex academic and research institutions.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Development Economics from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He also holds an MSc in Quantitative Development Economics from the University of Warwick, and MPhil and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics from the University of Ghana. This robust educational foundation underpins his deep understanding of economic principles relevant to national development.
Beyond his academic contributions, Professor Quartey has held significant strategic management and corporate governance roles. He served as a Board Member of Agricultural Development Bank from 2017 to 2025. He is currently the Vice Board Chairman of The Hunger Project Ghana, demonstrating his commitment to broader societal development.
The College of Education offers a wide array of programmes, from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, covering various disciplines. These include early-grade education, information technology, business administration, and social studies. At the postgraduate level, offerings span communication studies, development education, and educational leadership and management, reflecting the diverse needs of the education sector.
Professor Quartey’s appointment comes at a time when the University of Ghana’s College of Education is actively expanding its academic, research, and mentorship activities. He is also a co-founder and Executive Director of Startrite Montessori School Ltd and Startrite Christian College, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit in education.
