    Scientists have announced significant advancements in HIV prevention and treatment, including a twice-yearly injection and a weekly tablet. These findings will be presented at the 26th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2026) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Researchers believe these new medicines could improve HIV prevention and treatment worldwide. The key development is lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable medicine administered twice a year to prevent HIV infection. This differs from daily Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) pills, offering continuous protection through just two annual injections. This makes it a viable option for individuals who struggle with taking daily medication consistently. These innovations are particularly relevant for Ghana and other African nations. The continent carries a significant burden of HIV infections. Challenges like stigma, long distances to health facilities, and difficulties with daily treatment regimens often affect adherence. Medicines requiring fewer doses could substantially improve treatment uptake and support efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. A trial involving women in South Africa and Uganda demonstrated the effectiveness of lenacapavir. None of the participants who received the twice-yearly injections contracted HIV during the first year of follow-up. More than 95 percent of participants continued using the injections after the main trial, with 96 percent receiving their doses on schedule. A separate study confirmed lenacapavir's effectiveness and safety in preventing HIV infection. This study included men and gender-diverse people from seven countries, including South Africa and Brazil. The consistent results across diverse populations highlight the broad potential of this new preventative measure. Scientists also presented a weekly tablet combining the antiretroviral medicines islatravir and lenacapavir. This tablet is designed for people living with HIV. While it does not cure HIV, it maintains the virus at very low levels, preventing it from multiplying in the body. Clinical trials found that this weekly tablet controlled HIV as effectively as standard daily treatment. It was also deemed safe and well tolerated by participants. This offers a less frequent and potentially more manageable treatment option for those living with the virus. Dr. Beatriz Grinsztejn, President of the International AIDS Society and Co-Chair of AIDS 2026, emphasized the transformative potential of these advances. She stated that these medicines would only save lives if countries could make them affordable and accessible to those who need them. This highlights the critical role of policy and public health initiatives in ensuring equitable access. The new options could significantly benefit people in Africa and other regions. Reduced dosing frequency can overcome barriers to adherence, such as forgetfulness or the social stigma associated with daily pill-taking. This could lead to better health outcomes and a reduction in new infections across the continent. Ghana's public health efforts, including the deployment of condom vending machines and reports of declining new HIV infections in 2025, indicate a proactive approach to HIV prevention. The introduction of these long-acting treatments could further bolster these initiatives. They offer a powerful new tool in the fight against HIV, aligning with global goals to eradicate AIDS.
