KNUST-Led Consortium Links Climate Science to Health Policy

    A new consortium, led by Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has launched to bridge the gap between climate science, health research, and public policy in West Africa. The West Africa Climate and Health Science and Policy Consortium (WACH) aims to translate scientific evidence into actionable strategies. This initiative seeks to protect vulnerable communities from the health impacts of climate change across the region.

    The consortium's primary goal is to make scientific evidence useful for policymakers. It will not wait for new research but will instead 'harvest' existing data from various institutions. This approach ensures that current knowledge immediately informs policy decisions.     Professor Philip Antwi-Agyei, Consortium Director and Provost of the College of Science at KNUST, highlighted the urgency. He stated, "We are not going to wait until we begin to produce evidence ourselves. Already, there's a lot of evidence all over the place. We are going to harvest that evidence and see how it can be used to influence policy." This statement underscores the consortium's commitment to immediate action and practical application of research.

    Professor Roger Tine, Country Lead for Senegal, emphasized the need for African leadership in this field. He stated, "We cannot continue to sleep while our communities are suffering. So it is time for us to wake up and drive science that will lead to policy." This powerful message highlights the consortium's commitment to locally-driven solutions. The initiative aims to make Africa a hub for designing climate change solutions, not just observing its effects.
