Ghanaian scientists are actively raising and studying mosquitoes to combat the evolving threat of insecticide resistance in malaria prevention. Researchers at the Vestergaard–Noguchi Vector Labs (VNVL) in Ghana meticulously monitor mosquito colonies with varying resistance characteristics. This work ensures that crucial tools like insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) continue to protect communities effectively.
This vital research addresses a significant public health challenge. In 2024 alone, malaria infected 282 million people worldwide, causing 610,000 deaths. A staggering 94% of these cases and 95% of deaths occurred in Africa. Children under five accounted for three-quarters of all malaria fatalities. The ongoing evolution of mosquitoes, developing resistance to insecticides and altering their behaviour, threatens the efficacy of existing prevention methods.
This scientific endeavour is critical to Ghana's broader public health strategy and economic stability. Malaria places a heavy burden on healthcare systems and workforce productivity. Since 2000, malaria control efforts have prevented over 1.22 billion cases and 3.5 million deaths across Africa. ITNs were the largest contributor, preventing 72% of these cases. Continued research ensures Ghana maintains its progress against this debilitating disease, safeguarding its human capital and economic future.
Joannitta Joannides, Laboratory Manager at Vestergaard–Noguchi Vector Labs, highlighted the importance of this work. She stated that understanding mosquitoes helps answer critical questions about malaria prevention tool performance. The VNVL’s work supports quality assurance and product development. It generates reliable evidence on how nets perform against target mosquito populations. This ensures that products like PermaNet Dual, a latest-generation ITN, remain effective.
The implications of this research are far-reaching for public health and economic development. The 15-year partnership between Vestergaard and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research has built significant technical capacity in Ghana. This collaboration supports specialized expertise in mosquito rearing and insecticide resistance monitoring. A recent Memorandum of Understanding further strengthened this public-private partnership. It includes the Ghana National Malaria Elimination Program. This ensures sustained efforts towards Ghana’s malaria elimination target. The ongoing monitoring and research are essential to stay ahead of mosquito evolution. This guarantees that current and future ITNs perform as expected, protecting millions of lives and reducing healthcare costs.
