Speaking on Joy FM's Ultimate Health programme, Dr. Ashietey urged Ghanaians to adopt readily available and free 'basic biohacks,' with regular exposure to natural sunlight being the primary recommendation.
She explained that while the term 'biohacking' often suggests expensive technology and advanced medical treatments, some of the most impactful interventions are simple lifestyle adjustments. These practices are accessible to almost everyone. Dr. Ashietey presented a list of 10 such biohacks, emphasizing their cost-free nature and significant health benefits if mastered. She noted that advanced modalities can be considered if these basic steps are insufficient.
This advice comes as Ghana, a tropical country, offers abundant sunshine, yet many residents fail to utilize it due to modern indoor lifestyles. Dr. Ashietey observed that people often move from their homes to cars, then to offices, remaining indoors for most of the day. This pattern severely limits their exposure to natural light, despite living in a sun-rich environment.
Dr. Ashietey specifically recommended spending between 15 and 20 minutes outdoors in the early morning, ideally between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. This practice significantly improves vitamin D production, which is crucial for hormone synthesis and overall health. She highlighted vitamin D's role as a precursor for many hormones, including melatonin, which is essential for healthy sleep patterns.
Beyond vitamin D, early morning sunlight helps regulate the body's circadian rhythm, the internal biological clock controlling sleep and wakefulness. Morning light signals to the body that it is time to be active, while the absence of light at sunset prepares it for rest. Dr. Ashietey stated that this natural process is often disrupted by prolonged indoor time and excessive use of electronic devices, leading to increased insomnia and poor sleep quality.
Quality sleep is a critical component of healthy aging. Dr. Ashietey advised adults with regular work schedules to aim for bedtimes between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., securing at least six to seven hours of uninterrupted sleep nightly. During deep sleep, the brain's glymphatic system becomes active, clearing waste products accumulated throughout the day. Poor sleep has been linked to memory loss, anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline, with research suggesting a connection between chronic insomnia and Alzheimer's disease.
She cautioned against using mobile phones, televisions, and other electronic devices in bed. The light emitted by these screens stimulates the brain and suppresses melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. Creating a sleep-friendly environment—dark, quiet, and free from distractions—is crucial. For healthcare professionals and shift workers with irregular schedules, Dr. Ashietey recommended obtaining morning sunlight whenever possible. Those returning from night shifts should spend a short period outdoors before sleeping to support vitamin D production and create an artificial night-time environment during daytime sleep by blocking light and reducing noise.
Dr. Ashietey also touched upon advanced wellness assessments, such as heart rate variability analysis, which can estimate biological age and assess stress response. These tools provide insights into health and resilience, guiding individuals toward informed lifestyle changes before chronic illnesses develop. She also mentioned intermittent fasting as a method to improve metabolic health and manage weight when practiced correctly, though she warned against extended fasts exceeding 24 to 72 hours.
