The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has officially presented its Ghana Climate Atlas to the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC). This move aims to integrate critical climate information into Ghana's national development planning and policymaking processes.
The presentation followed GMet's request for a strategic partnership with the NDPC. GMet sought to demonstrate how the Atlas can support policy formulation, public investment decisions, climate risk management, and long-term development planning across the country.

Principal Meteorologist Ms. Maureen Abla Ahiataku stated that the Atlas is Ghana's first comprehensive long-term climate projection platform. It was developed with support from the Government of Denmark through the Danish Meteorological Institute. The platform, officially launched in March 2026, provides historical climate data and future projections at national, regional, district, and agro-ecological levels.
The Atlas projects significant climate shifts for Ghana. Under a medium-emission scenario, Ghana's average temperature is expected to increase from approximately 27.8°C to around 29°C by 2081. This temperature rise will impact various sectors, including agriculture and energy consumption. Coastal communities are also projected to remain vulnerable to sea-level rise, erosion, and other climate-related threats, necessitating proactive planning and investment in protective infrastructure.
Ms. Ahiataku emphasized that GMet staff manage the platform to ensure its long-term sustainability. The Atlas provides projections on rainfall, temperature, and sea-level rise under different greenhouse gas emission scenarios. This allows users to assess climate conditions up to the end of the century, providing a long-term perspective for strategic planning.
GMet is also expanding its public weather alert systems. These include WhatsApp notifications, the Common Alerting Protocol, and planned location-specific alerts via telecommunications networks. These systems will improve public safety and preparedness for extreme weather events, reducing potential economic losses.
Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, Director-General of the NDPC, described the presentation as timely. She highlighted that climate information will be critical for preparing and implementing Ghana's long-term national development plan. This plan will guide national investments and policy decisions for decades to come.
Dr. Amoah urged GMet to align key climate indicators with the Commission's forthcoming national results framework and Sustainable Development Goals reporting system.
