Climate-driven temperature changes are projected to cause approximately 430,000 additional deaths every year by 2050. This alarming figure indicates that poor countries will experience 10 times more fatalities than richer nations.
This grim forecast is primarily due to unequal access to electricity, which is essential for cooling systems like fans and air conditioners. A new report by the Climate Impact Lab highlights that many countries most vulnerable to rising temperatures lack the infrastructure to provide adequate cooling. This creates a significant disparity in how different populations can adapt to a warming planet.
This situation exacerbates existing economic inequalities and poses a severe challenge to public health in developing nations. Ghana, for instance, is projected to record more than 4,000 additional heat-related deaths annually by 2050. This trend underscores the urgent need for robust energy policies and climate adaptation strategies across the continent. The economic implications are substantial, as increased mortality and morbidity will strain healthcare systems and reduce productivity.
Michael Greenstone, a co-founder of the Climate Impact Lab, emphasized the life-saving role of air conditioning. He stated, "Air conditioning is a life saver, and climate change will no doubt lead to more AC adoption in today’s wealthy countries." Greenstone added that many countries globally will not be able to respond similarly, leading to significant deaths in nations that have contributed least to climate change. He urged countries to improve electricity markets for inexpensive and reliable energy.
The report's findings suggest a widening gap in climate resilience between high-income and low-income countries. Decision-makers must prioritize investments in sustainable energy solutions and climate-resilient infrastructure. International cooperation will be crucial to support vulnerable nations in developing their electricity markets and implementing effective adaptation measures. Failure to address this disparity will lead to a humanitarian crisis and further economic instability in affected regions.
Currently, only the world's wealthiest can afford the electricity needed for widespread cooling. Middle-income countries are expected to expand their electricity supply for cooling seven times more than low-income countries. In low-income nations, the projected increase in electricity use per person due to warming will be minimal, barely enough to power a single LED bulb for four months. These same poor countries often experience hotter climates.
The report identifies 18 countries, home to 676 million people, trapped in this deadly combination of extreme heat and insufficient cooling. Around 377,000 people in these areas are projected to die annually by 2050. These populations reside in low-income or lower-middle-income countries, predominantly in northern sub-Saharan Africa, including Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Chad, and in Southern Asia, such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar.
This contrasts sharply with wealthier nations like Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Despite similar high temperatures, these Gulf countries consume significantly more electricity for cooling. For example, Niger's projected increase in electricity use per person will be one-ninth that of Saudi Arabia. Communities in Niger could face 27,000 more annual deaths by 2050 compared to their wealthier counterparts.
Africa is expected to become significantly hotter, leading to many more heat-related deaths. Niger could see heat-related deaths rise by 68 people per 100,000, followed by Burkina Faso (60), Djibouti (55), Chad (47), and Mauritania (42). These countries are also projected to have only small increases in electricity supply, ranging from 0.06 to 0.07 gigajoules per person. This means many homes will lack power for essential cooling systems.
Ghana is also among the countries caught in this "heat trap." The report projects about 19 additional heat-related deaths for every 100,000 people. Approximately one-third of Ghana's population lives in these high-risk areas. Ghana's outlook is mixed, being less affected than Burkina Faso and Togo but more vulnerable than Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire. The country's electricity supply is not growing fast enough to meet the rising demand for cooling technologies.
