Dr. Ato Forson has extended his lead as the frontrunner for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer position, securing 32.5% of voter support. A new nationwide poll by Global Info Analytics confirmed this strong position for the 2028 general election.

The survey, conducted between May 30 and June 12, 2026, showed NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia in second place with 21.2% support. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu followed closely with 21.1%. These findings are based on responses from 8,784 voters across all 16 regions of Ghana, highlighting Dr. Forson's significant advantage.

This development is crucial for Ghana’s political landscape, particularly for the NDC as it prepares to select a successor to President John Dramani Mahama. The ongoing internal contests reflect the party's strategic positioning ahead of the next presidential election cycle. Data from previous polls by Global Info Analytics in March 2026 showed shifts in candidate support, indicating a dynamic race.

Global Info Analytics noted that several candidates lost ground since its March 2026 survey. Former Education Minister Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang saw the sharpest decline, dropping 5.5 percentage points to 8.5%. Mr. Asiedu Nketia's support decreased by 3.9 percentage points, while Mr. Iddrisu's support fell by 1.9 percentage points.

The poll further explored hypothetical head-to-head contests among the leading contenders. Dr. Forson defeated both Mr. Asiedu Nketia and Mr. Iddrisu by identical margins of 62% to 38%. A direct contest between Mr. Asiedu Nketia and Mr. Iddrisu resulted in a much closer outcome, with Mr. Iddrisu leading by 51%.

Regional voting patterns show Dr. Forson's strong support in Akan and swing-voter regions. Mr. Asiedu Nketia remains the preferred candidate in the Volta and Oti regions. Mr. Iddrisu dominates the northern bloc, where he commands about 60% support.

The survey also examined how potential NDC candidates would perform against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 presidential election. Dr. Forson would lead Dr. Bawumia by 54% to 34% among all voters. He would also lead by 53% to 29% among first-time voters. Mr. Asiedu Nketia was projected to defeat Dr. Bawumia by 49% to 38%. Mr. Iddrisu led the Vice President by 51% to 36%. Professor Opoku-Agyemang's matchup against Dr. Bawumia was tighter, with her leading by 44% to 40%, close to the survey's margin of error.

Global Info Analytics conducted the poll using 7,484 face-to-face interviews and 1,302 online responses. The research firm stated a 99% confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5%. These results provide an early snapshot of the internal NDC dynamics as the party gears up for the next presidential election.

Political actors and market observers will closely monitor future polls and party primaries. These events will confirm the NDC's ultimate choice for the 2028 presidential bid. The selection will significantly influence Ghana's economic and political direction.
