The fifth edition of the X1 Division One League Super Cup officially launched with an electrifying 3-3 draw between Attram De Visser and newly promoted Premier League side Debibi United. The opening Group A fixture, held at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Monday, saw Attram De Visser stage a remarkable second-half comeback.
Debibi United initially dominated the game, establishing a commanding 3-1 lead. However, goals from Abdul Majid Maswud and Thomas Okyere secured a crucial point for the Accra-based Attram De Visser. This result sets an exciting tone for the remainder of the competition, which provides a vital pre-season platform for clubs.
This tournament is a significant event in Ghana's football calendar, offering Division One League clubs a competitive environment before the new season. It allows teams to fine-tune their strategies and assess player performance. The Super Cup also contributes to the broader sports economy by generating interest and engagement among fans and sponsors.
Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, performed the ceremonial kick-off, marking the official start of the competition. Abdul Majid Maswud, who scored Attram De Visser's second goal, was named Man of the Match for his inspiring performance. He highlighted the team's determination, stating, “We were giving up, but our coach backed us up with his words and motivated us to come back and equalise when we were down.”
Debibi United's assistant coach, Francis Makiya, attributed his team's collapse to a lapse in concentration. He noted, “We led 3-1, but I think in the last hour, there was a lack of concentration from my boys and Attram were able to come back.” Attram De Visser coach Godwin Attram emphasized the tournament's value for squad assessment, stating, “It’s a very exciting pre-season tournament and good for the players. We just want to see team organisation, structures, advantages and disadvantages of how the team attack and defend.”
Hoshii International Limited, producers of X1 Energy Drink and Hoshii Instant Rice, sponsors the tournament. Ivy Udanoh, representing the company, explained that the partnership aims to strengthen their connection with football supporters and enhance brand awareness. She remarked, “Ultimately, the partnership will help us build brand awareness and also get a stronger connection with the football community.”
The Super Cup features prominent teams like former Premier League campaigners Real Tamale United and Cape Coast Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs. These teams are scheduled to compete in subsequent matches, promising more thrilling encounters. The tournament's success can lead to increased investment in local football, fostering talent development and boosting the sports industry's contribution to the national economy.
The competition's format, with experienced teams and new entrants, creates a dynamic environment for player development and tactical innovation. Such events are crucial for maintaining the competitive edge of Ghanaian football. The engagement from sponsors like Hoshii International Limited also demonstrates the growing commercial viability of sports in Ghana, attracting corporate support that benefits clubs and players alike.
