The Management of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has extended a formal invitation to Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams. He will serve as the Special Guest Speaker for the University’s upcoming 60th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service. This significant event is scheduled for September 2026.
The invitation was delivered during a courtesy call on Thursday, June 4, 2026. This visit was part of broader stakeholder engagements leading up to UPSA’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The Thanksgiving Service aims to acknowledge six decades of the institution’s growth, service, and impact. It will gather university members, alumni, partners, and distinguished guests.
UPSA’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, led the delegation. He expressed deep gratitude for Archbishop Duncan-Williams’ continuous support. Prof. Mawutor described the Archbishop as a father figure. His guidance has been crucial to the University’s development over many years. "You have been a father figure to this University," Prof. Mawutor stated. "We are deeply grateful for your continuous support and commitment to our progress."
The university also plans a four-day revival program for students and staff. This initiative aims to strengthen the spiritual life within the UPSA community. Prof. Mawutor appealed to Archbishop Duncan-Williams for support and spiritual leadership for this program. The Archbishop welcomed the delegation warmly. He praised UPSA’s remarkable transformation and infrastructural development.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams noted UPSA’s growing student population and increasing national and international visibility. He sees UPSA as a standout institution among Ghana’s leading higher education centers. "What is encouraging is that, despite changes in leadership, there has been continuity of the legacy and vision of the University," he remarked. "That is the mark of a strong institution."
He also commended UPSA for valuing faith and divine guidance. This focus is seen as vital for holistic institutional progress. "As a relatively young university, UPSA continues to make remarkable strides," Archbishop Duncan-Williams said. "It is refreshing to see an institution that appreciates the importance of faith and divine guidance in its pursuit of excellence." He pledged his full support for the revival program. He also reaffirmed his commitment to partnering with UPSA. This partnership will foster academic excellence and character development.
The UPSA delegation included key figures. Registrar Mrs Lorraine Gyan and Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Emmanuel Selase Asamoah were present. Prof. Samuel Antwi, Rev. Dr Stephen Acheampong, and Rev. Theophilus Tetteh also attended. Mrs Aba Lokko, Director of Public Affairs, and UPSA Alumni President Mr Francis Dadzie were also part of the group.
This event highlights the growing emphasis on holistic development in Ghanaian higher education. Universities are increasingly seeking spiritual and community-building elements alongside academic pursuits. The celebration in September 2026 marks a significant milestone, reflecting a sustained commitment to education and institutional legacy in Ghana. The partnership with Archbishop Duncan-Williams underscores the perceived importance of spiritual engagement in fostering a strong institutional culture and student well-being.
