Two Remanded Over GHS 932,040 Fuel Theft and Tanker Fire

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two individuals accused of stealing 54,000 litres of petrol valued at GHS 932,040. The alleged theft involved setting fire to the tanker transporting the fuel, which itself was valued at GHS 980,000.

Alhassan Amidu, a driver, and Francis Owusu, a driver's mate, face charges of conspiracy to commit crime, stealing, and causing damage. They allegedly conspired to sell the fuel before intentionally burning the tanker to make the incident appear accidental. This action directly impacts J.K. Narh Transport, the company owning the fuel and vehicle, causing a significant financial loss.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges within Ghana's logistics and transportation sectors, particularly concerning valuable commodities like fuel. Fuel theft and pipeline vandalism have long been a concern, affecting operational costs for businesses and potentially contributing to higher prices for consumers. The total value of the stolen fuel and destroyed tanker, amounting to GHS 1.912 million, represents a substantial economic blow to the affected company. Such crimes can deter investment in the transport sector and inflate insurance premiums for haulage companies.

The prosecution informed the court that the accused persons were assigned to transport the 54,000 litres of petrol from Tema to Buipe in the Savannah Region. Investigations revealed the accused admitted to tampering with the tanker's compartment seal to access the fuel. Emmanuel Narh, owner of J.K. Narh Transport, reported the suspected foul play to the police, leading to the arrests.

The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the culpability of the accused and could set a precedent for addressing similar crimes. Businesses in the fuel distribution chain will closely monitor the outcome, potentially reviewing their security protocols and insurance coverage. The case highlights the need for robust oversight and accountability within the logistics sector to safeguard valuable assets and maintain economic stability.

The alleged actions of the driver and his mate, if proven, represent a significant breach of trust and a direct financial loss to the company. Such incidents can erode confidence in the integrity of supply chains and necessitate stricter enforcement measures. The two accused persons are scheduled to reappear before the court on August 31, 2026, as investigations continue into the matter.
