Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has inaugurated the Board of Directors for its new subsidiary, G-Water Bottling Limited. This board will transform the company into a visible and commercially successful bottled water brand in Ghana.
This inauguration is part of GWL's strategy to diversify its revenue streams. It also aims to strengthen business operations and create sustainable value. G-Water Bottling Limited will manufacture, package, and distribute safe, high-quality drinking water.
The move represents a significant step beyond GWL's traditional role of providing potable water. Ghana’s bottled water market is competitive, valued at over GHS 500 million annually. This initiative allows a state-owned enterprise to tap into new commercial opportunities. It also strengthens its financial position amid broader economic pressures on public utilities.
Mr. Eric J. Biliguo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ghana Water Ltd, addressed the ceremony in Accra. He stated that G-Water Bottling Limited is a key part of the company’s long-term growth strategy. He noted the brand already has public support due to its quality but needs to achieve its full commercial potential.
Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of GWL, highlighted the opportunity to use GWL's water production expertise. This will help G-Water Bottling Limited compete effectively in Ghana's bottled water industry. The company expects to generate additional revenue. It also aims to strengthen the Ghana Water brand, create jobs, and contribute to national economic development. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows manufacturing contributed 8.1% to Ghana's GDP in 2022. This new venture seeks to expand that contribution.
The Board members include Mr. Agbesi Nutsu as Chairperson and Dr. Hadisu Alhasan as Executive Director. Mr. Sulemana Alhassan Alancash and Joseph Zefo Kero are Non-Executive Directors. Madam Innocentia Kuupiel is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Mr. Agbesi Nutsu, Chairman of the new Board, pledged strong leadership. He stressed the company’s role as a strategic subsidiary of Ghana Water Limited. Its responsibility is to provide reliable and high-quality drinking water.
This strategic diversification by GWL could serve as a model for other state-owned enterprises. It shows how they can seek new income sources beyond their core mandates. The success of G-Water Bottling Limited will influence future investment decisions by GWL. It will also be watched by market analysts assessing the financial health of public corporations. Investors will monitor its performance in Ghana's competitive beverage market. The initiative’s impact on job creation and local economies will also be crucial.
