The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has committed GHS 1 million in financial support to each of the 18 Premier League clubs. This direct payment aims to enhance operational stability and ease financial pressures on teams.
This significant allocation forms part of a broader GHS 9.5 million financial and incentive package for the upcoming 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season. The GFA announced this initiative during its 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram. The package also includes GHS 3 million for the league champions and GHS 1 million for the runners-up.
Ghanaian football clubs frequently grapple with financial challenges, impacting their ability to maintain competitive teams and manage rising operational costs. This new GFA support addresses a critical need for consistent funding. The previous season saw a similar GHS 1 million payment, but uncertainty about its continuation complicated financial planning for clubs.
Collins Atta Poku, Chief Executive Officer of Aduana Football Club, described the GFA's financial support as highly significant. He stated that this direct injection of funds is one of the most transformative initiatives in the GFA president's tenure. Mr. Poku emphasized the importance of consistency in such financial provisions.
The direct financial injection will likely reduce the burden on club owners and management. For clubs like Aduana FC, the GHS 1 million could cover approximately one-third of their annual operating budget. This support is crucial for teams with limited resources, allowing them to focus more on player development and league performance. The new football season is scheduled to commence on September 5.
