GCB Bank employees have launched 95 community development projects across Ghana. More than 4,000 staff members are mobilising to deliver these initiatives under the bank’s Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP).
This employee-led initiative aims to improve access to essential services and create better learning environments. It also seeks to strengthen healthcare delivery and address other pressing community needs. Each of the 95 staff groups, comprising about 50 employees, contributes time, ideas, and resources.
This widespread community engagement by a major financial institution highlights a growing trend. Ghanaian corporations are increasingly investing in social responsibility initiatives. Such programmes often complement government efforts in critical sectors like education and health. They also demonstrate a commitment to national development beyond core business operations.
Ms. Farihan Alhassan, Managing Director of GCB Bank, stated that SCIP reflects the bank’s commitment to creating value. She explained that GCB believes its responsibility extends beyond banking services. Ms. Alhassan noted that staff members, living within these communities, understand local challenges. SCIP empowers them to act on that understanding, supporting practical interventions that improve lives.
The programme's strength lies in its people-led approach and the collective commitment of staff. These projects will create safer learning environments and improve access to educational resources. They will also provide medical equipment and refurbish hospital wards. Water and sanitation projects will focus on providing mechanised boreholes and improved washroom facilities.
The projects cover a wide range of areas including education, healthcare, and water sanitation. They also address environmental sustainability, youth development, and social welfare. Specific interventions include classroom renovations, provision of desks, and ICT facilities for schools. Healthcare support involves hospital beds and facility improvements. Water projects will provide safe water to schools, healthcare facilities, and correctional institutions.
Ms. Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer, emphasised the staff’s commitment. She stated that SCIP brings together passion, ideas, and commitment for meaningful community impact. The projects vary based on community needs but share a common goal: improving people's lives. This initiative underscores the importance of corporate citizenship in Ghana’s economic landscape. It also shows how local knowledge can drive effective development.
The bank’s investment in these projects contributes to Ghana’s broader socio-economic goals. It helps address infrastructure gaps and improve human capital development. Such initiatives can foster stronger community ties and enhance the bank's reputation. They also provide a model for other corporate entities to follow. The long-term impact of these 95 projects could be significant for many Ghanaian communities.
