Communities surrounding the Damang Gold Mine Limited (DGML) in Ghana's Western Region have applauded the company's management for significant early progress following its takeover of the concession. Within four months, DGML has engaged 180 local residents in employment and commenced critical infrastructure projects, including an airstrip and road construction.
This positive reception stems from DGML's swift action on community priorities. These include increased local employment, improved infrastructure, and a more collaborative relationship with host communities. The developments signal a departure from historical grievances and a move towards mutual respect and continuous engagement, according to local leaders.
The Damang Mine's transition to DGML on April 18, 2026, marked a pivotal shift for an operation central to the area's economy for over three decades. This change generated considerable expectations among host communities regarding employment, infrastructure, and local business opportunities. The current progress suggests these expectations are beginning to be met, fostering a more stable environment for mining operations and local development.
Nana Kwabena Amponsah IV, Chief of the Bosomtwi Divisional Council, spoke on behalf of the host communities. He stated, "We have gathered today to publicly acknowledge the positive relationship that has developed between Damang Gold Mine Ltd and its host communities since the company assumed responsibility for the Damang Mine." He emphasized that the early experience under DGML indicates that community objectives can be pursued effectively through dialogue and cooperation.
Looking ahead, the early momentum must be sustained to translate into lasting improvements in livelihoods, infrastructure, and local economic participation throughout the mine's operational life. Beyond infrastructure, the employment pipeline is a major highlight. Nearly 400 people from the mine's catchment communities have entered various stages of DGML's recruitment process. Of these, 180 are already engaged and working, with another 220 either progressing through recruitment or awaiting results.
