The Upper West Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled an armed robbery syndicate, arresting six suspects involved in a series of Mobile Money (MoMo) attacks. These operations, spanning the Wa West District and Wa Municipality, led to the recovery of approximately GHS 25,344 in stolen funds.
The arrests followed months of intelligence-led and coordinated police operations. Victims were reportedly attacked with machetes and forced to disclose their MoMo PINs. The syndicate then transferred money from the victims' accounts into accounts controlled by the robbers.
This incident highlights the growing threat of digital financial crime in Ghana, particularly targeting the widespread MoMo service. Mobile Money transactions have become an integral part of Ghana's economy, facilitating daily commerce for millions. The vulnerability of users to such violent attacks underscores the need for enhanced security measures and public awareness campaigns.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Francis Yiribaare, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, confirmed the arrests in a statement. He stated that the police are intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend two additional alleged members of the syndicate who remain at large.
The six suspects arrested are Amadu Moro, 35; Adama Yussif, 40; Nasiru Abdul Rahman, 52; Iddrissu Adama, 35; Korika Issaka, 20; and Zakaria Brigi, 21. Nasiru Abdul Rahman sustained injuries during the operation and died upon arrival at the Upper West Regional Hospital. His body is currently at the hospital mortuary awaiting preservation and autopsy.
Preliminary investigations have linked Adama Yussif, Amadu Moro, and the deceased Nasiru Abdul Rahman to several robbery incidents. These include attacks at Kpenateng Junction on August 1, 2026, Kulkpara-Dapoha on June 19, Kpenateng Community on June 15 and May 23, and Piisi-Dapoha on March 27, 2026. These dates indicate a sustained period of criminal activity by the group.
Police investigations have established that GHS 22,070 in cash was allegedly taken directly from victims. An additional GHS 3,274 was reportedly siphoned through the victims’ MoMo accounts, bringing the total stolen amount to GHS 25,344. Seven mobile phones were also retrieved from the suspects and are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The two alleged members still at large have been identified as Haruna, 30, believed to be the gang’s armourer, and Amadu Mahamudu, 24, the son of the deceased suspect. The Upper West Regional Police Command is actively pursuing these individuals.
The Command urges residents, especially those in affected communities, to remain vigilant. They are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the Police. Public cooperation is crucial in providing credible information to help investigators apprehend the remaining suspects and prevent further criminal activities.
