Standard Bank Group and UnionPay International have expanded their e-commerce partnership, enabling merchants in nine African countries, including Ghana, to accept UnionPay online payments. This development allows businesses to process secure online transactions from UnionPay cardholders, significantly broadening their access to international consumer demand.
The expanded capability strengthens digital commerce across Africa by offering merchants more payment choices. It reduces checkout friction for customers and helps businesses serve international travellers, cross-border shoppers, and companies operating across multiple markets. This strategic move addresses the growing need for diverse payment options in Africa's expanding digital economy.
This initiative builds on a collaboration announced in 2024, reflecting the increasing trend of African businesses seeking to serve customers beyond their domestic borders. The continent's e-commerce, travel, tourism, and regional trade sectors continue to grow, making robust international payment systems crucial. For Ghanaian businesses, this means improved conversion rates and greater participation in the global digital marketplace.
Bill Blackie, Chief Executive for Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank Group, emphasized the importance of this expansion. He stated, "African businesses are increasingly selling beyond their domestic markets and the ability to accept trusted international payment methods is becoming essential to that growth." Blackie added that the partnership helps merchants reduce payment friction and reach more customers.
The expansion means online merchants in Ghana, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe can now offer secure UnionPay e-commerce acceptance. Approximately 900 participating merchants across these countries benefit from this enhanced payment infrastructure. UnionPay cards are accepted in 183 countries and regions globally, with 51 countries in Africa alone.
This partnership is critical for African businesses looking to tap into the global market. Accepting internationally recognized payment methods online can significantly improve customer reach and support participation in cross-border digital commerce. The ability to process UnionPay transactions connects local businesses to a vast network of cardholders worldwide.
Mr. Feng Chen, General Manager at UnionPay International Africa Branch, highlighted UnionPay's commitment to expanding its payment network in Africa. He noted, "Our collaboration with Standard Bank enables more merchants to accept UnionPay online and gives UnionPay cardholders greater choice and convenience when transacting with African businesses." This collaboration supports safer, simpler, and more connected digital commerce.
The expanded acceptance capability is locally relevant, regionally scalable, and connected to international customer flows, supported by Standard Bank's extensive African presence. This ensures that the payment solutions are tailored to local market needs while facilitating global transactions. The partnership is a testament to the growing importance of seamless digital payment solutions for economic growth.
For Ghana, this development supports the government's digital transformation agenda and efforts to boost trade. Businesses can now more easily attract international customers, potentially increasing export revenues and fostering economic diversification. The integration of UnionPay further diversifies payment options available to consumers and businesses, enhancing financial inclusion.
The move also signals a broader trend of international payment providers recognizing Africa's burgeoning digital economy. As more consumers adopt online shopping, the infrastructure for secure and diverse payment methods becomes paramount. This partnership positions participating African merchants competitively in the global e-commerce landscape.
