MobileMoney Fintech begins nationwide KYC update for agents and merchants

MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL) has initiated a nationwide 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) update for all its MoMo agents and merchants. This crucial drive aims to strengthen Ghana's digital financial space against fraud and financial crimes. The verification exercise, which started on July 6, is scheduled to end on October 31, 2026.

This initiative seeks to improve customer records and ensure MMFL's operations meet strict regulatory standards. The mobile money ecosystem in Ghana currently serves over 17 million registered subscribers. This update will enhance security across the entire MoMo network, safeguarding both users and operators.

The KYC update forms an important part of Ghana's broader efforts to formalise and secure its digital economy. The Bank of Ghana has consistently pushed for enhanced financial sector regulation, especially in the rapidly expanding fintech space. This move by MMFL aligns with these regulatory directives, ensuring compliance and fostering trust in digital transactions. Previous efforts have included SIM card re-registration, which aimed to link mobile numbers to valid National Identification Cards.

Abdul Razak Issaka Ali, Chief Commercial & Operations Officer for MobileMoney LTD, emphasised the importance of the exercise. He stated that agents and merchants are central to the mobile money ecosystem and protecting their businesses is a priority. Mr. Ali noted the KYC update is vital for accurate records, network security, and meeting regulatory requirements.

MMFL has deployed designated hotspots across major towns to help streamline the update process. Partners can update their details through the Smart Onboarding Portal. Agents and merchants can also log directly into the official portal for self-service. The update process is brief but requires proper documentation. Merchants and agents must present a valid Ghana Card and business registration documents, such as Form A or C, a Business Registration Certificate, or a municipal/district assembly certificate.

To maintain transparency, MMFL will send automated SMS notifications at every stage of the application. These messages cover initial submission, verification, and final approval. Mr. Ali warned that any agent or merchant failing to complete the KYC update by the October 31 deadline will face immediate service restrictions. Services will only be reinstated once their records are fully verified. For troubleshooting, users can contact their local Territory Sales Coordinators or visit a MobileMoney Customer Service outlet. This proactive measure signals a sustained commitment to robust digital financial security.
