Ghana International Bank PLC (GHIB) and Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to strengthen Ghana's export sector, expand international business opportunities, and accelerate economic growth. The partnership seeks to provide Ghanaian businesses with crucial financial and institutional support.

The collaboration will help Ghanaian businesses compete more effectively in international markets. It will also position Ghana as one of Africa's leading export economies. The agreement brings together Ghana's national export-import development bank and the United Kingdom-based international bank. Their combined efforts will improve access to trade finance, correspondent banking, and syndicated lending for local businesses.

This partnership fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to boost exports and diversify its economy. Ghana has consistently sought ways to increase its foreign exchange earnings and reduce reliance on traditional commodity exports. This MoU builds on previous government initiatives to support local industries and integrate them into global value chains. The nation's economic stability depends heavily on a robust export sector.

Ian Greenstreet, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana International Bank PLC, described the MoU as the beginning of a strategic relationship. He stated, "This memorandum of understanding is the beginning of a strategic relationship between Ghana EXIM Bank and Ghana International Bank." Mr. Greenstreet expressed confidence that the partnership would deliver tangible benefits for Ghana's economy. He emphasized that both institutions share a common vision of strengthening Ghana's export capacity.

The partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for businesses seeking to expand beyond Ghana's borders. It will provide improved access to international banking services, trade finance solutions, and cross-border business opportunities. This includes correspondent banking services, working capital financing, and letters of credit. The collaboration will also offer treasury and foreign exchange services, commodity finance, and export-readiness programmes. These services are vital for businesses navigating complex international trade environments.

Expanding exports is critical for Ghana's long-term economic transformation. Increased exports will not only improve the country's external trade position but also stimulate domestic production. This will encourage greater investment in value-added industries. The partnership aligns with Ghana's broader ambition of promoting export diversification, industrialisation, and sustainable economic development. These goals are central to the nation's economic policy framework.

Under the MoU, GEXIM and Ghana International Bank will explore initiatives to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This includes improving their access to finance and preparing them to compete in regional and global markets. Support will cover market intelligence, capacity building, quality standards, and export-readiness programmes. These initiatives will enable Ghanaian businesses to meet international requirements and expand their global footprint.

GEXIM, established under the Ghana Export-Import Bank Act, 2016 (Act 911), supports Ghana's export sector. It provides financing, guarantees, advisory services, and trade facilitation. Ghana International Bank PLC, incorporated in the United Kingdom, offers a range of international banking solutions. These include correspondent banking, trade finance, and treasury services to clients across Africa and global markets. The combined expertise and networks of both institutions are expected to significantly enhance Ghana's export capabilities.

The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to combine expertise, international networks, and institutional capabilities. This will improve access to global financial services for Ghanaian businesses. Mr. Greenstreet expressed optimism about the future, stating, "We look forward to this collaboration with a lot of excitement." This partnership holds the potential to significantly increase Ghana's foreign exchange earnings and create more jobs.
