FirstBank Opens Tema Community 25 Branch to Boost SME Support

FirstBank Ghana has opened a new branch in Tema Community 25, significantly expanding its physical presence in one of the Greater Accra Region's fastest-growing commercial and residential areas. This strategic expansion aims to intensify competition for small business and retail banking customers.

The new facility, located at the Greenville Hospital Junction, will serve residents, entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and corporate organizations. It will also cater to other businesses operating within Community 25 and its surrounding areas. This move forms part of FirstBank Ghana’s broader strategy to increase access to banking services in key commercial locations.

Tema Community 25 has emerged as a rapidly expanding residential and business hub in recent years. This growth is driven by increasing population, significant real estate development, robust trading activity, and a rising presence of SMEs. For financial institutions, such communities are becoming crucial battlegrounds for deposits, transaction banking, lending, remittances, and digital financial services.

FirstBank stated the branch will offer a full suite of services for individuals and businesses. These services include loans and advances, foreign exchange transactions, digital banking, and remittances. It will also handle collections for utilities, school fees, and government-related payments.

Osahon Ogieva, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Ghana, highlighted the importance of the new branch. He stated the opening marks another milestone in the bank’s commitment to delivering accessible and customer-focused banking services across the country. Mr. Ogieva emphasized FirstBank Ghana’s dedication to supporting businesses and empowering individuals in the vibrant community.

The branch opening occurs as banks navigate the balance between digital expansion and targeted physical presence. While mobile and internet banking have reduced the need for routine branch visits, physical branches remain vital for relationship banking and business advisory. They are also crucial for cash services, customer onboarding, and building trust, especially in communities with many SMEs.

For FirstBank, the Community 25 branch represents more than just geographical expansion. It signifies a belief in the continued relevance of relationship banking within an economy where SMEs require more than just transactional access. Many small businesses need working capital, efficient payment solutions, advisory support, and structured banking relationships to achieve growth.

Mr. Ogieva reiterated that SMEs are central to Ghana’s economic development. He confirmed FirstBank will continue to support this sector through tailored financial solutions, advisory services, and digital banking platforms. He added that FirstBank aims to build lasting relationships with customers by understanding their needs and delivering solutions that support sustainable growth.

This emphasis on SMEs reflects a broader trend in Ghana’s banking industry. Lenders are increasingly seeking to deepen credit and transaction relationships with businesses outside the traditional corporate market. SMEs account for a significant share of employment and commercial activity in Ghana. However, many still face challenges accessing affordable credit, formal advisory services, and efficient payment platforms.

For communities like Tema Community 25, improved banking access can directly boost local commerce. A branch located close to businesses and households reduces travel time and enhances customer engagement. It also allows banks to better understand the economic profile of the community they serve.

Enoch Adams, Acting Head of Retail Banking at FirstBank Ghana, confirmed the new branch reinforces the bank’s commitment to strong customer experiences. He noted that Community 25 is home to a dynamic business community. Mr. Adams stated their presence allows them to provide personalized financial solutions and contribute meaningfully to the area’s economic development.
