Ecobank Ghana's Executive Director of Corporate and Investment Banking, Henry Ampong, has stated that digital innovation must drive financial inclusion and expand access to economic opportunities across Africa. This commitment extends beyond merely digitizing banking services to fundamentally transforming how people live and transact.

Speaking at the Ecobank–JoyNews Business Financial Dialogue on Tuesday, July 28, Mr. Ampong explained that technology is reshaping daily life, work, and transactions. He highlighted how digital transformation is redefining access to financial services, enabling individuals, businesses, and communities to participate more actively in the formal economy, regardless of their location or income level.

This focus aligns with Ghana's broader economic narrative, where digital finance has emerged as a significant success story in Africa. The country has seen substantial growth in mobile money and digital payment platforms, contributing to increased financial access for many previously unbanked populations. Ecobank's initiatives, such as the Express Account, introduced long before digital banking became widespread, have played a crucial role in this trend by allowing customers to open accounts via mobile phones.

Mr. Ampong affirmed Ecobank's long-held belief that financial inclusion and digital transformation are inseparable. He described these principles as central to the bank's purpose as a pan-African financial institution. He noted that Ecobank has consistently invested in innovation to make banking digital, accessible, and borderless, serving millions of customers across more than 35 African countries through its integrated financial services platforms.

The implications of this approach are significant for Ghana's financial landscape and its citizens. Increased digital access to financial services can foster economic growth by enabling more small businesses to access credit and more individuals to save and invest. Decision-makers and markets will closely watch how these digital initiatives continue to address remaining challenges like affordability, digital literacy, and infrastructure gaps.

Ecobank's commitment to financial inclusion is not a recent development but a deliberate strategic priority spanning many years. The bank recognized early that mobile phones would become powerful tools for expanding financial inclusion. This vision has continued through mobile banking, USSD services, and digital self-service capabilities, ensuring banking accessibility regardless of device type or data sophistication.

In Ghana, more than 800,000 customers are active users of the Ecobank mobile app. This figure reflects growing confidence in digital financial services and the trust customers place in the bank's platforms. Innovations like cardless withdrawals using e-tokens across Ecobank's ATM network and virtual cards for secure online transactions further enhance accessibility and security.

Mr. Ampong emphasized that these innovations are designed to broaden participation in the formal financial system. They provide multiple pathways for first-time banking customers, digitally active individuals, entrepreneurs, and businesses to engage more deeply with the opportunities of a modern digital economy. This means empowering people to participate more fully in economic life, not just connecting them to a bank account.

While Ghana has made strong progress in digital finance, Mr. Ampong acknowledged that the journey towards full financial inclusion is not complete. Millions of Africans remain underserved by formal financial services. Addressing challenges around affordability, digital literacy, trust, and infrastructure requires collective action and collaboration among all partners, including the Bank of Ghana, regulators, telecommunications companies, and fintech firms.

The Ecobank–JoyNews Business Financial Dialogue Series was established to facilitate meaningful conversations on issues shaping the future of finance and economic development. Through this platform, Ecobank aims to contribute to solutions that drive sustainable growth and greater financial inclusion in Ghana and across Africa.
