The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has secured a credit rating upgrade from Moody’s Ratings. This move elevates its long-term issuer rating from B2 to B1, bringing it closer to investment-grade status with a stable outlook.

This significant upgrade, announced on August 17, 2026, by EBID in Lomé, Togo, follows Moody’s assessment of the bank’s sound solvency. The rating agency also noted EBID’s moderate capitalisation and resilient asset quality. This improved rating is expected to enhance EBID’s ability to access international capital markets on more competitive terms, strengthening confidence among investors and development partners.

This development positions EBID more strongly within the broader West African economic landscape. It underscores the growing financial robustness of regional institutions crucial for development financing. The upgrade comes as Ghana and other ECOWAS member states seek stable funding sources for critical infrastructure and economic projects. It also reflects a positive trend for regional financial bodies amidst global economic uncertainties.

Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, President and Chairman of EBID’s Board of Directors, stated the upgrade reflects the bank’s progress. He said, “This upgrade is a clear recognition of the progress EBID has made in strengthening its financial foundation and institutional capacity.” Dr. Donkor added that the rating validates confidence from shareholders, partners, and the international community in EBID’s role.

The upgrade provides a stronger financial foundation for EBID as it expands its development financing activities. It will help the bank mobilise additional capital for projects across ECOWAS member states. Decision-makers and markets will closely watch how this improved rating translates into tangible project funding and economic growth in the region.

Moody’s attributed the improved rating to EBID’s consistent ability to maintain financial strength while expanding its lending operations. The rating agency also recognised the bank’s efforts to diversify its funding sources. Furthermore, it highlighted strong shareholder support, including continued paid-in capital contributions and strategic partnerships. These factors collectively contributed to the positive re-evaluation of EBID’s creditworthiness.

A key development supporting EBID’s stronger financial position was the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) entry as its first institutional shareholder. This partnership was approved in June 2026. EBID stated this collaboration would bolster its capital base and improve governance standards. It also provides further validation of EBID’s crucial role in mobilising resources for development across West Africa.

The rating upgrade aligns with EBID’s ongoing implementation of its Growth, Resilience and Optimisation (GRO) Strategy 20262030. This five-year programme focuses on critical areas such as infrastructure development, renewable energy financing, and private sector expansion. Climate resilience is also a significant component of this strategic plan. The bank has intensified its strategic operations, with projects in healthcare and energy aimed at expanding electricity access and creating jobs.

These initiatives are designed to support sustainable economic growth throughout the West African sub-region. The Moody’s upgrade therefore provides a more robust financial platform for EBID. It enables the bank to pursue its ambitious development agenda with greater access to capital. This will facilitate the implementation of projects vital for regional prosperity and stability.
