An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Augustine Okechuku Maazi, 49, into custody. This follows an alleged attempted robbery at a GCB Bank branch in Labone. Maazi, an unemployed man, pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including conspiracy and attempted robbery.
Police investigations link Maazi and five other suspects to a series of alleged robberies. These incidents occurred between May and August 13, 2026, in Tema, Spintex, and Labone. Two suspected accomplices died during the August 13 attempted robbery in Labone. The group allegedly operated in Togo and Côte d’Ivoire as well.
This case highlights persistent security challenges facing financial institutions and their customers in Ghana. Armed robbery syndicates targeting bank patrons have been a recurring concern for law enforcement. The Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police received numerous complaints about such activities. This led to increased surveillance around banks in the Greater Accra and Tema Metropolises. Such incidents can erode public confidence in the banking system and deter economic activity.
The trial Judge, Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan, denied Maazi’s bail application. He cited the serious nature of the charges and the defence's failure to prove a fixed place of abode. The prosecution opposed bail, stating that Maazi, residing in a hotel, posed a flight risk. They also argued that ongoing investigations could be compromised if he were released.
The court's decision underscores the judiciary's commitment to addressing serious crimes. This includes those that threaten economic stability and public safety. The ongoing police efforts to apprehend other suspects signal a continued focus on dismantling such criminal networks. Businesses and individuals must remain vigilant, and financial institutions may need to enhance their security protocols. The case has been adjourned to September 2, 2026, for further proceedings.
Police investigations revealed the syndicate allegedly monitored bank customers. They used master keys to open vehicles or broke into them. On May 17, 2026, suspects allegedly trailed a woman who withdrew GHS 50,000 from Republic Bank, Tema. They robbed her at gunpoint in Agbamaame. On June 11, 2026, another man was attacked after withdrawing money from Republic Bank, Achimota. The group typically operated during banking hours. CCTV footage from Zenith Bank and Fidelity Bank at Spintex on June 9 and 11, 2026, showed suspects using a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson. These vehicles were later found to have replaced foreign number plates with Ghanaian ones. This facilitated their alleged criminal activities.
