The Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB Ghana) have jointly pledged to deepen their collaboration. This partnership aims to strengthen ethics and professionalism within the banking sector, ensuring a more resilient and trusted financial system for Ghana.
This commitment emerged from a courtesy visit by the Governing Council of CIB Ghana to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, on Friday, 31 July 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra. The meeting also served to formally introduce the new leadership of CIB Ghana and acknowledge the Governor's leadership in the banking industry.
This renewed focus on ethical conduct and professional standards is crucial for Ghana's economic stability. A robust and trustworthy banking sector underpins investor confidence and facilitates economic growth. The discussions highlighted the importance of addressing emerging risks and upholding high standards to sustain public trust in financial institutions. This aligns with broader efforts to reform and modernize Ghana's financial landscape, ensuring it can support the nation's development goals.
Governor Asiama emphasized that banking professionals must demonstrate competence, professionalism, and ethical conduct, similar to those in the health sector. He commended CIB Ghana's ongoing support for initiatives by the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB) to combat fraud and other threats to trust. The Governor also outlined the Bank's efforts to ensure rigorous verification processes and the success of community banking reforms.
The discussions covered several critical areas, including raising the standard of ethics and professionalism, enhancing customer protection, and preventing cybersecurity threats and fraud. The institutions also explored the impact of digital assets, ongoing banking sector reforms, and the future role of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing in shaping the banking industry. These topics reflect the rapid evolution of financial services and the need for continuous adaptation.
CIB Ghana's incoming President, Dr. Ellen Ohene-Afoakwa, presented a vision focused on elevating ethics and professionalism. This vision includes rebuilding the Bankers' House and hosting the World Conference of Banking Institutes (WCBI) in Ghana in 2028. Hosting this international event will provide a significant platform for Ghana to showcase its banking sector, professional education ecosystem, and contributions to global banking development.
The Institute's initiatives, such as the Branch CEO Programme, the Chartered Banker for Executive Leadership (CBEL) Programme, and industry-wide ethics certification, are vital. These programs aim to develop competent, ethical, and future-ready professionals for Ghana's financial services industry. The Governor challenged CIB Ghana to extend its ethics and capacity-building programs to community banking and the wider financial ecosystem, ensuring a comprehensive approach to professional development.
This collaborative effort between the Bank of Ghana and CIB Ghana is essential for maintaining a sound and resilient banking sector. It reinforces the commitment to fostering an ethical environment that supports sustainable economic growth and protects consumers. The continuous focus on professionalism and integrity will help Ghana's financial institutions navigate future challenges and opportunities effectively.
