The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has successfully raised 1.5 billion dollars in its largest-ever bond issuance on the international capital markets. This significant transaction, announced on Tuesday, July 28, marked the bank's return to the public U.S. dollar bond market. The offering attracted 3.8 billion dollars in orders, which was more than 2.5 times the amount issued.
The proceeds from this bond sale will finance crucial trade activities, industrialization efforts, and various projects across Africa. These initiatives are designed to support and accelerate economic growth throughout the continent. The strong demand allowed Afreximbank to tighten pricing on both tranches by 37.5 basis points from initial guidance, reflecting high investor interest.
This successful issuance fits into a broader narrative of increasing international investment interest in Africa's economic potential. Despite global economic uncertainties, institutions like Afreximbank continue to attract significant capital for development projects. This trend highlights a growing recognition of Africa's long-term growth prospects and its role in the global economy. The bank's ability to secure such substantial funding underscores its critical function in mobilizing resources for the continent's progress.
Chandi Mwenebungu, Managing Director of Treasury and Markets and Group Treasurer at Afreximbank, stated, "This successful issuance shows the confidence that investors continue to place in Afreximbank and in Africa’s growth story." He added, "For us, this is a clear sign that the market continues to believe in Afreximbank’s work and in Africa’s economic prospects." This sentiment emphasizes the bank's strategic importance in fostering economic development.
The successful bond sale implies a strengthened financing capacity for Afreximbank, enabling it to expand its support for intra-African trade. Decision-makers and markets will closely watch how these funds are deployed to stimulate economic activity and foster regional integration. This capital injection is expected to boost various sectors, creating new opportunities and driving sustainable development across African nations. The bank's diversified funding strategy, including previous Samurai and Panda bond issues, further solidifies its financial resilience.
The offering was split into two distinct tranches, each valued at 750 million dollars. The first tranche is a 5.5-year bond, yielding 6.25%, and will mature in January 2032. The second tranche is a 10-year bond, yielding 7.125%, with a maturity date in July 2036. These bonds attracted a diverse group of investors from key financial hubs, including the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia, and the United States.
This transaction marks Afreximbank's first public dollar issuance since May 2021. In that previous issuance, the bank successfully raised 1.3 billion dollars through two bonds with five and 10-year maturities. The bank's assets and guarantees stood at 48.5 billion dollars as of December 31, 2025. Its shareholders' equity totaled 8.4 billion dollars, underpinning its strong financial position and ability to access global capital markets. HSBC Bank plc coordinated the recent transaction, with several other major banks serving as joint lead managers and bookrunners.
