The Upper East Regional Directorate of the Department of Agriculture has taken delivery of 28 motorbikes. This delivery falls under the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP). The motorbikes will significantly strengthen agricultural extension services. They will also improve field monitoring across beneficiary districts.
These new vehicles enhance the mobility of agricultural extension officers. This allows them to reach farmers more effectively. They will support the implementation of food production activities under the FSRP. The programme now covers nine districts, expanding from an initial five. These districts include Binduri, Bawku West, Nabdam, Talensi, Bongo, Kassena-Nankana Municipal, Builsa South, Builsa North, and the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to bolster food security and agricultural output. The FSRP focuses on strengthening food system resilience. It targets key commodities in the northern zone, such as tomatoes, soybeans, maize, and rice. Improved extension services are vital for increasing yields and adopting better farming practices. This directly impacts the livelihoods of farmers and the regional economy.
Mr. Yakubu Mohammed Awal Meigoro, the Upper East Regional Crops Officer, confirmed the FSRP's expansion. He stated that each of the nine beneficiary districts received three motorbikes. Alhaji Zakaria Fuseini, the Regional Director of Agriculture, urged proper management and maintenance of the motorbikes. He cautioned against using them for non-programme related activities. This ensures the assets serve their intended purpose and prolongs their lifespan.
The proper use and maintenance of these assets are critical. Alhaji Mohammed Issahaku, Chief Director of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, emphasized this point. He stated that good management builds confidence among development partners. This encourages further investment in agriculture. He stressed that failing to manage assets properly would deter future support for the agricultural sector. This highlights the importance of accountability in resource allocation.
The motorbikes are intended to support food security activities. They must be available whenever agricultural officers need them for field activities. This investment aims to improve agricultural extension delivery. It also strengthens food production across the Upper East Region.
