A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Public Health, Mr. John Arko Mensah, issued a warning about these dangers. He highlighted that most Ghanaian farmers do not use protective equipment when spraying chemicals. This lack of protection makes farmers sick and worsens air pollution across the country.
This issue fits into Ghana's broader economic story concerning public health and agricultural productivity. The agriculture sector is a cornerstone of the Ghanaian economy, employing a significant portion of the workforce. Widespread illness among farmers can reduce output and increase healthcare burdens, impacting national development goals. Mr. Mensah stated, "Chemicals from pesticide sprays enter the air and cause air pollution, which can affect farmers’ health through cancer and heart illness. This can kill slowly." He emphasized that direct exposure without protection is dangerous. Runoff from sprayed areas can also contaminate water sources, posing risks to entire communities.
The implications are significant for both public health and the agricultural economy. Farmers' health directly affects their ability to work and produce food. Increased illness could lead to higher healthcare costs and reduced agricultural output, impacting food security and export revenues. Decision-makers must consider policies that promote safer pesticide use and provide protective gear.
Research shows that direct contact and inhalation during spraying are common among Ghanaian farmers. Studies from the University of Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Ghana (UG) confirm these practices. A 2020 study of vegetable farmers in the Central Region found pesticide exposure linked to headaches, coughing, skin rashes, and dizziness. These symptoms are common among farmers who lack protective gear.
Former Secretary of the Peasant Farmers Association, Mr. Charles Nyaaba, urged farmers to adopt best practices. He advised spraying early in the morning or late evening when wind is minimal. He also stressed the importance of avoiding spraying against the wind and always using nose masks, gloves, and boots. Mr. Nyaaba shared personal experiences of headaches, dizziness, and nausea after applying pesticides. He has also observed farmers developing various cancers from long-term chemical inhalation.
The problem extends beyond individual farmers to surrounding communities. Mr. Nyaaba noted that air pollution from spraying can affect community members living near farms. Farmers in the Volta Region reported headaches and skin diseases from spraying without nose masks. In Ashaiman, farmers described poisonings among youth and the elderly due to unprotected weedicide use. This highlights the widespread public health risk.
Emmanuel Asare, a farmer in Ashaiman, explained that many farmers avoid protective gear because it generates heat. He appealed to the government to provide protective jackets, gloves, face masks, and drones for spraying. He also called for more education on the safe use of pesticides and weedicides. Mr. Stephen Kadre, Chairman of the Ashaiman Left Bank Rural Farmers Association, echoed this appeal. He stated that many of the 130 farmers on 200 acres lack protective gear. Drones could help use chemicals wisely and protect consumers.
Both Mr. Mensah and Mr. Nyaaba advocate for increased training and sensitization for farmers. Their goal is to enable farmers to boost food production without sacrificing their health.
