India is making a significant push to become a global leader in strawberry production, aiming to develop its own plant varieties. This strategic move seeks to reduce the country's reliance on imported strawberry mother plants, which currently dominate the industry.
The mountainous Mahabaleshwar region in western India is central to this ambition, accounting for approximately 85% of the nation's strawberry cultivation. This area benefits from a long, cool growing season between November and March, at altitudes exceeding 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Despite these natural advantages, farmers face substantial risks, including crop loss from sudden heavy rains, making strawberry farming a high-stakes venture.
The broader context for this initiative is India's drive for agricultural self-reliance and economic resilience. The country's agricultural sector is a cornerstone of its economy, and reducing dependence on foreign inputs strengthens domestic supply chains. This effort aligns with national policies promoting local innovation and sustainable farming practices.
Dr. Darshan Shashank Kadam, Assistant Professor of Horticulture at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), confirmed the long-term vision. He stated, "The goal is to fast-track the development of India's first indigenous, climate-resilient strawberry cultivar that matches the large fruit size and firm texture of foreign varieties while natively tolerating Indian heatwaves." This research, conducted in partnership with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), uses controlled gamma irradiation to induce genetic mutations, though results may take 10 to 15 years.
In the near term, MPKV is supporting farmers by developing scientific packages of practices. These include standardized planting schedules, fertilizer recommendations, and growth regulator applications tailored for Mahabaleshwar conditions. These measures aim to improve yields and reduce risks for current farming operations.
Large-scale farmers are also investing in advanced technology to overcome climate challenges. Ketan Yashwant Sodha, CEO of Berry Fresh Agrotech, transitioned from traditional open-field farming to hydroponics in 2022. He experienced significant initial losses but has since refined his methods, allowing for year-round strawberry production. His innovative approach includes precise water management, limiting each plant to 750 milliliters of water daily, which enhances fruit flavor and concentration.
Sodha's team also conducts regular laboratory testing of plant tissues to monitor nutrient uptake. This allows for precise adjustments to the water supply, ensuring optimal plant health and fruit quality. By using semi-open polyhouses, Berry Fresh Agrotech has transformed strawberries from a seasonal fruit into a continuous crop, demonstrating the potential for technological solutions in Indian agriculture.
The implications for India's agricultural sector are significant. Successful development of indigenous strawberry varieties will reduce import costs and enhance food security. It will also create new economic opportunities for farmers and agricultural scientists.
