Ghana's government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the shea industry through increased investment and strategic partnerships. This initiative aims to unlock the sector's economic potential, creating jobs and improving livelihoods for thousands of people.

The government plans to inject GHS 100 million into the shea value chain over the next three years. This funding will support production, processing, and market access for shea products. The investment seeks to enhance Ghana's position in the global shea economy.

This commitment aligns with Ghana's broader economic diversification strategy, which focuses on adding value to agricultural raw materials. The shea industry, predominantly supported by women in northern Ghana, is a key component of this strategy. Developing the sector can significantly contribute to rural economic development and poverty reduction, as highlighted in the 2023 Ghana Poverty Profile report.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah pledged, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, to lead a symbolic shea tree planting at the Jubilee House. Mr. Debrah stated this gesture reflects the government's determination to promote the growth of the shea industry. He emphasized that the government will encourage investments across the shea value chain and foster partnerships to enhance production and processing.

The government's focus on the shea industry signals a push for sustainable economic growth and inclusive development. Stakeholders, including local communities and international partners, will closely monitor the implementation of these investments. Success in this sector could serve as a model for other agricultural value chains in Ghana, attracting further foreign direct investment.

Mr. Debrah called on industry stakeholders, development partners, investors, and businesses to join the Global Shea Alliance. He stressed that greater collaboration would maximize the industry's potential. This collaboration is crucial for improving the livelihoods of communities, particularly women, who depend on shea production. The government believes sustained investment and stronger partnerships will position Ghana as a leading player in the global shea economy. Developing the industry will create sustainable employment opportunities and promote inclusive economic growth.
