COCOBOD disburses GHS 34.5 billion for cocoa purchases

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has disbursed an additional GHS 2.6 billion to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) for cocoa purchases. This latest payment brings the total amount paid to over GHS 34.5 billion for the current crop season. The funds are designated for onward payment to cocoa farmers across all cocoa-growing regions in Ghana.

This significant financial injection aims to clear existing payment arrears owed to thousands of cocoa farmers. Many farmers had sold their cocoa on credit and faced delays in receiving their money. Approximately GHS 1.4 billion of the newly released funds are specifically allocated to settle these remaining balances with farmers.

These disbursements are critical for Ghana's cocoa sector, a cornerstone of the national economy. Cocoa exports are a major source of foreign exchange for the country and directly impact the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians. Persistent payment delays can destabilize farmer incomes and undermine production incentives, threatening the country's position as a leading global cocoa producer.

COCOBOD confirmed the latest release, stating it has paid a total of GHS 34,523,447,255.64 to LBCs since the 2025/26 crop season began. The Board emphasized its close collaboration with LBCs to ensure all affected farmers receive their dues. "COCOBOD is working closely with the Licensed Buying Companies to ensure that all affected farmers receive their payments," a statement from the Board read.

The proactive disbursement aims to restore farmer confidence and maintain stability in the cocoa value chain. Future monitoring mechanisms put in place by COCOBOD will ensure funds reach legitimate suppliers. This commitment is vital for Ghana to sustain its cocoa output and meet international demand, especially as global cocoa prices remain volatile. All stakeholders will be watching to see if these measures effectively prevent future payment delays and secure farmer welfare.
