Women farmers in Ghana's Upper East Region are adopting biochar production to counter the escalating cost of chemical fertilisers, which now reach approximately GHS 500 per bag. This initiative provides a sustainable alternative for smallholder farmers struggling with high input costs and limited access to credit.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), through its LOGMe II Sahelian Landscapes Project, is training farmers in 14 communities across the Upper East and Upper West Regions. This training teaches them to produce and apply biochar, a carbon-rich material made from agricultural waste, as a soil enhancer. The project aims to reduce dependence on expensive imported fertilisers and improve soil health.
This development is crucial for Ghana's agricultural sector, particularly in northern regions where smallholder farmers, predominantly women, face significant economic challenges. High input costs, coupled with changing climate conditions, threaten food security and agricultural productivity. The reliance on chemical fertilisers has also raised concerns about long-term soil degradation and food quality, making sustainable alternatives vital for the nation's economic stability.
Richard Kwame Denteh, a Soil Research Scientist, explained that biochar is produced through pyrolysis, a process of heating organic materials like maize cobs and rice husks in a low-oxygen environment. He stated, "When added to the soil, it activates nutrients in the soil. It replaces or augments the need for fertiliser." Mr. Denteh added that biochar can eventually eliminate the need for chemical fertilisers entirely by making the soil rich and fertile.
The adoption of biochar has significant implications for both farmers' livelihoods and environmental sustainability. It offers a path to reduced production costs, increased yields, and improved soil resilience against climate change impacts. Decision-makers and agricultural markets will closely watch the scalability and long-term economic benefits of this approach, especially as global fertiliser prices remain volatile. This shift could empower thousands of smallholder farmers and contribute to Ghana's broader food security goals.
Beyond improving soil fertility, biochar helps soil retain moisture, supports beneficial microorganisms, and enhances soil structure. These benefits are particularly important for the dry conditions prevalent in Ghana's Sahelian regions. The process also contributes to environmental protection by reducing agricultural waste burning and capturing carbon in the soil, aligning with national climate action goals.
Celestina Aduko, a farmer in the Talensi District, highlighted the financial strain of current fertiliser prices. She noted, "A bag of fertiliser costs around GHS 500. How many of us can afford it?" Her experience reflects the struggles of many women farmers who often operate on smaller land parcels and have limited access to financial resources. The biochar training has provided a new perspective for farmers like Ms. Aduko, who now see value in farm waste.
Derick Sedenkor, the project officer for the IUCN initiative, confirmed that the project extends beyond biochar production. It also supports community tree nurseries in all 14 beneficiary communities. This integrated approach aims to restore degraded landscapes and strengthen climate resilience across the northern regions. The Talensi District Agriculture Extension Officer, Simon Ayaabanga, reported encouraging responses from farmers, particularly women, with some already producing biochar for sale.
The long-term effects of excessive dependence on chemical fertilisers, including impacts on soil health and food quality, have been a growing concern. Mr. Denteh cautioned that too much fertiliser can reduce the quality of food. The biochar initiative directly addresses these concerns by promoting a more natural and sustainable method of soil enrichment. This transition from expensive, external inputs to locally produced, eco-friendly alternatives marks a significant step towards agricultural self-sufficiency in Ghana.
