AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has commissioned a piggery production centre in Sanso, Obuasi, costing GHS 2.8 million. This facility is designed to boost livelihoods and diversify economic opportunities beyond mining in the municipality.
This initiative falls under the mine's 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP). The centre aims to increase pig production, improve food security, create employment, and strengthen community-based agribusiness in the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District. It directly impacts local farmers and residents seeking sustainable income sources.
Ghana's economy is actively seeking diversification away from its reliance on natural resources, particularly mining. Investments in agriculture and agribusiness, like this piggery project, align with national strategies to boost non-traditional exports and create resilient local economies. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service consistently highlights the need for job creation in rural areas, making such localized agricultural investments crucial.
Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized the company's commitment. He stated, “At AngloGold Ashanti, our purpose is mining to empower people and advance societies. We believe that creating lasting value beyond mining requires investing in sectors that generate sustainable livelihoods and strengthen local economies.” This reflects a broader trend of mining companies investing in social projects to secure their social license to operate.
The successful launch of this centre suggests a positive outlook for the local agricultural sector. It could lead to increased local food production and more stable incomes for cooperative members. Decision-makers will observe the project's long-term impact on employment figures and economic diversification in the Obuasi region. Future private sector investments in Ghana's agricultural value chain may follow this model.
The pilot phase of the piggery programme showed significant success. Nine farmers increased their combined pig population from 173 to 428 animals. This represents a growth of about 171 per cent. This positive outcome directly influenced the decision to establish the larger, centralized production centre.
The new facility features 20 modern pig pens, office space, and storage facilities. It also includes quality breeding stock and operates on a fully solar-powered energy system. This solar power makes the farm climate-smart and environmentally sustainable.
AngloGold Ashanti directly invested GHS 1.49 million in the facility's construction. An additional GHS 1.37 million covered furnishing, breeding stock, veterinary services, and capacity-building. It also provided six months of feed support for beneficiaries. Local contractor X-Mell Construction executed the project, promoting indigenous businesses.
Management of the piggery has been handed over to the Obuasi Municipal Co-operative Pig Farmers and Marketing Society Limited at Sanso. Cooperative members have received training in modern pig production, animal health, record-keeping, and cooperative governance. This training ensures the project's long-term viability and success.
Faustilove Appiah Kanin, Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, commended AngloGold Ashanti. She urged beneficiaries to manage the facility responsibly. She emphasized the importance of cooperation among members to maximize the project's impact on local livelihoods. This adds a critical layer of local government oversight and community engagement.
